Description

Crafted by the renowned American silversmith S. Kirk & Son of Baltimore between 1880 and 1890, this exceptional coin silver tray is a remarkable example of Victorian craftsmanship. Beautifully hand-decorated with an elegant grape and vine motif, the design symbolizes hospitality, abundance, and prosperity while showcasing the naturalistic repoussé artistry for which Kirk became internationally celebrated.

What truly distinguishes this tray is its extraordinary construction. Measuring just 10 inches in diameter, it weighs an astonishing 31.6 troy ounces, making it exceptionally heavy for its size. Produced in Kirk's desirable 11-ounce coin silver standard (approximately .917 fine silver), it was crafted from an unusually thick gauge of silver, reflecting the highest level of quality commissioned by affluent clients during the late 19th century. Pieces of this weight are exceptionally scarce and were intended to convey both luxury and permanence.

Small trays of this type were commonly referred to as waiters or salvers and were most often used to present a fine wine, sherry, or cordial service, although they also served as elegant presentation or reception trays in distinguished Victorian homes.
