Description

A magnificent example of Edwardian silver interpreted through the flowing lines of the Art Nouveau movement, this exceptionally large sterling silver gallery tray was made in Sheffield, England in 1907 by Sibray, Hall & Co. Ltd., bearing the maker’s mark associated with Charles Clement Pilling.

Measuring an impressive 27 inches across the handles, the tray is beautifully proportioned with a broad serving surface surrounded by a raised gallery and substantial handles. Its design reflects the influence of the Glasgow and Cymric schools of Art Nouveau, where traditional silversmithing was transformed by organic curves, stylized natural forms and a distinctly modern artistic sensibility.

At nearly two feet across before the handles are included, the scale alone gives this tray a commanding presence. Large sterling silver gallery trays of this period required a considerable investment in both precious metal and craftsmanship and were intended for the grandest interiors and dining rooms.

Created at the height of the British Art Nouveau period, this 1907 example beautifully bridges traditional Sheffield craftsmanship with the progressive design movement sweeping Britain at the beginning of the 20th century. Its unusual styling, exceptional size and substantial sterling silver construction make it as compelling displayed as a work of decorative art as it is used for entertaining.
